The US Department of Justice passed a regulation that would allow new enforcement methods to take effect in the United States, the Associated Press reported.
In the United States, executions in recent years have been carried out mainly by lethal injections. This can only be waived if the injection is not available or if the convict requests another method of execution.
However, new regulations that take effect in the near future may change this. The wording of that sentence was worded as such
it may be carried out by any means authorized in the executing Member State.
In practice, this means that in some Member States for implementation
they can use an electric chair, possibly deadly gas, or even put convicts in front of an execution squad.
There may be some surprises that
the effective date of the new regulation is December 24th.
An anonymity official from the Justice Ministry said they wanted to harmonize the new law on the death penalty with the new legislation, which stipulates that sentences must be carried out “as required by the laws of the member states.”
The official also added that the federal government
shall not place anyone in front of a firing squad or place him in an electric chair unless that method of execution is specifically approved by that Member State.
Five more death sentences are scheduled to be carried out during Donald Trump’s remaining presidency, although it is easy for the outgoing president to pardon those convicted.
Democrats and anti-death penalty organizations are also likely to oppose the new regulation. A spokesperson for Joe Biden has previously made a statement on the matter, saying that the Democratic candidate-elect
“He will oppose the death penalty now and in the future and will work to abolish it.”
Donald Trump, on the other hand, previously said that the death penalty can be an effective deterrent and an appropriate punishment for certain crimes.
