The leaders of the EU member states have agreed with the European Parliament to make the next seven-year budget cycle conditional on the rule of law. This was first reported by the German news agency DPA. This concludes a historic three-week series of conversations.

To be sure, the Hungarian government lost a serious battle in Brussels, as the parliament managed to enforce most of its demands. From the beginning, the Hungarian government protested against the so-called rule of law mechanism.

Anna Donáth, Momentum MEP, also reported the news on Twitter.

In it, the politician writes, they have won a serious victory against corruption and undemocratic governments.

With the new rule of law mechanism, we can protect Viktor Orbán’s taxpayers’ money

Donáth wrote.

In connection with the news, several news portals citing the DPA news agency mention the Hungarian government and Viktor Orbán. The Re Jerusalem news portal writes:

“The deal is grandiose, as both the Hungarian and Polish governments have previously threatened to block important EU decisions if the payment of EU funds is subject to the rule of law.”

Justice Minister Judit Varga responded to the news on Facebook. According to Varga, the European Parliament should not blackmail the Hungarian government, but should instead deal with stopping the coronavirus epidemic in EU countries.

It is unacceptable that the European Parliament continues to blackmail Hungary politically and ideologically, despite the current epidemic situation and the serious challenges facing the European economy. It is unacceptable that the Hungarian opposition MEPs are working against Hungary’s economic interests in Brussels

– Wrote the Minister of Justice. He added that it would be better for the European Parliament to be part of the solution rather than the problem and not jeopardize the adoption of the EU budget. Without it, the EU will not be able to help the Member States that need it most.

According to Judit Varga, there is no agreement. In his Facebook post, he wrote that the Hungarian government would stick to the July agreement between the heads of state and government.

“The EP wants to avoid the Treaties and wants to implement the historic budget agreement, which is an irresponsible and flawed measure.”

Judit Varga said.
