A day before the new epidemiological restrictions came into force, the Austrian Ministry of Health reported a record number of new coronavirus infections on Saturday, the MTI reported.

According to the ministry, there have been 3,614 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, a significant jump from 2,571 the day before. During the last seven days, an average of 172.1 people per 100,000 inhabitants was registered in Austria.

The number of people in the country who have contracted the virus so far is close to 80,000. A total of 965 people died from complications of the Covid-19 disease caused by the infection, according to a summary from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

The situation is worse in Salzburg, Tirol and Vorarlberg.

Starting Sunday, new restrictions will take effect in our western neighbor. For smaller private meetings, a maximum of six people can be in a closed room and 12 outdoors at a time. They can accommodate up to a thousand in larger enclosed spaces and up to 1,500 for massive outdoor events. The list of places where it is mandatory to wear a protective mask has also been expanded, such as in train stations and shopping centers. This has already been mandatory in public transport and ski lifts.
