A convoy of Chinese fighter jets involved in a previously announced military exercise violated Taiwan’s airspace. The move was a response to a visit by the highest-ranking American leader in nearly half a century. This news in itself shouldn’t come as a surprise, but the size of the link itself is a message.

US Secretary of State Under Secretary of State for Commerce Keith Krach arrived on Thursday and drew strong criticism from China.

Today, two H-6 bombers, eight J-16 fighters, four J-10 f fighters, and four J-11 fighters crossed the line in the Taiwan Strait, entering the southwestern Taiwan air defense zone.

Due to the tension between the two countries, fighter jets generally avoid the area, in which case the intention was clear. The aerial violators were detained by the Taiwan Air Force Readiness Patrol and air defense missile systems were also activated to counter the threat.

Several actors in the Taiwanese government, including President Cai Ing-wen, have expressed concern about the increasing number of similar incidents that could easily lead to a major conflict.
