The number of deaths did not increase during the coronavirus epidemic, according to the data series from the Central Statistical Office (CSO), which is now available weekly for 5 years. Accurate assessment is also not easy, as the data fluctuates from week to week, and the typical season for the influenza virus is the beginning of the year, so there may be large differences from year to year in the data from same week mortality. At the same time, all we can say is that recent statistics do not at all refute the low official mortality rates of the coronavirus.
In Hungary, 430 people died in two months as a result of a coronavirus infection, and if this is correct, we hardly need to see a jump, as an average of 2,500 people die each week in Hungary. And there really is no jump in the data. Furthermore, the proportion of deaths among those over 65 has not increased, so we cannot have significantly more deaths from coronavirus than we can see in official figures.
