It also changes its name, its new name will be the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences, according to a decision of the Parliament on December 15, 2020.

Two more universities will become foundations

Pannon University and Szent István University may be transformed in the future.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM) said today on its website:

Sándor Csányi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences Foundation,

the president and CEO of OTP Bank will own Bonafarm, one of the largest agri-food groups in the country.

The member of the board of trustees will be:

  • István Nagy Minister of Agriculture,
  • Péter Horn, rector emeritus, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences,
  • Zoltán Bedő, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and
  • János Lázár Deputy, Government Commissioner in charge of coordinating the state tasks of the Yeguada Nacional Mezőhegyes.

The main task of the board is to support the continued development of the institution with long-term goals in mind and to create the conditions for modern and competitive training and research. The expectation of the model change is that by leveraging the diverse training palette of the Hungarian University of Agricultural and Life Sciences and increasing international recognition of Hungarian agricultural economics, training and research, it will be among the top 100 agriculture-focused universities in the world by 2030.

Corvinus Reform:

Where is the development and internationalization of the university going after the “viral” academic year?

The first example of a change in model was the Corvinus University in Budapest.

Another six universities will move to the foundation

Starting in July, the universities of veterinary medicine, MOME, Miskolc, Sopron, Neumann and Széchenyi will also be exempt from the state reserve.

According to the government decision, as of July 1, 2020, the University of Veterinary Medicine, Miskolc University, Moholy-Nagy University of Arts, Neumann János University, Sopron University and Széchenyi István University will have the right to establish and maintain an express status moved to an asset management foundation constituted for this purpose.
