Index – Economy – Next year, the government will not grant subsidies to local governments for public transport

The 2021 budget no longer includes support for local public transport maintained by municipalities on a separate budget line. And now it turns out that

It won’t even be, as the government already withdrew it from the Epidemiology Fund this year and has no plans to replace it.

– This was clear from András Tállai’s written response to the written question of the Szeged MSZP representative, Sándor Szabó, on behalf of Finance Minister Mihály Varga.

For Szeged, this means deducting 328 million HUF, so buses and trams can spend less money next year, hvg.hu quoted Szeged.hu news as saying. But not only does the local government of Szeged have to quickly find a solution to the new lack of funds, but 69 other settlement leaders may also think, in summary, that the source of 2 billion HUF has contributed to the financing of the local public transport in a total of 70 settlements.

In his response, Tállai also writes that if a municipality has problems with operating costs, it can request extraordinary support from the Interior Ministry, because the government will definitely provide the mandatory tasks. Public transportation, on the other hand, is a voluntary task.
