The first US LNG tanker with 143,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas was docked in Omisalj, Krk, on Friday, and the floating terminal began commercial production, said Hrvoje Krhen, director of LNG Hrvatska.
The capacity of the Adriatic liquefied gas terminal is 2.6 billion cubic meters per year.
Over the next three years, it was able to sell all of its capacity, eighty percent by 2027 and then half by 2035, Krhen said.
The Croatian government decided in April 2016 that a high capacity onshore LNG terminal is not needed at the moment and will first build a floating terminal which can then be converted to land.
The planned terminal for the Kvarner Bay will start operations in 2021 and the project will cost 234 million euros (84.8 billion guilders), of which the floating LNG terminal (FSRU) alone will cost 160 million euros .
The Croatian government supported the construction of the LKG terminal in Krk with one hundred million euros (36.2 billion guilders): 50 million euros in 2019 and another 50 million euros in 2020.
The project was supported by the Coordination Committee of the European Network Development Fund (CEF) of the European Union in February 2017 with a decision of € 101.4 million. The remaining amount will be provided by LNG Hrvatska and the country’s main electricity and gas market companies (HEP, Plinacro) in accordance with the financing plan approved by the Croatian government.
