On Friday night, Mayor Gergely Karácsony announced new measures affecting the capital’s budget. The mayor has been fighting the government for a long time over various financial deductions, which he called a policy of sacrifice in the video.
“First they lose the city’s money, then they force the city to impose austerity, and then they criticize austerity.”
– described the ruling party’s strategy towards the capital in the Christmas video uploaded to Facebook, but added that the city administration is not willing to play from the Fidesz score, there will be no restrictions.
“We save ourselves, we don’t squeeze, we really save”
– outlined the new urban defense austerity package, the details of which were also explained in detail.
- Starting in 2021, the so-called mayor framework, which originally managed 200 million HUF, will end,
- Reduce the costs of political leadership in Budapest by a third, part of which is that the resigned Dávid Dorosz will not be replaced by a fifth deputy mayor,
- reduce the budget of political groups in the capital and reduce the number of commissions from eight to five,
- The Mosaic Background Institute will be abolished, whose tasks will be assumed by other municipal institutions, and the Market and Hall Directorate of the Metropolitan Municipality (CSAPI) will also be dismissed, the company will merge into another capital institution,
- six urban management companies merge on the Vienna and Berlin model (Stadtwerke model). The six companies are Budapest City Management Holding, Főkert, FKF, Főtáv, Funeral Institute and Főkétüsz. This decision was scheduled for Christmas 2023, but had to be advanced due to the crisis. As a result of the merger, 21 positions on the supervisory board will be eliminated, but according to Christmas, colleagues who perform substantive professional work will not be affected by the reorganization. Also in this case, he stressed, breaking the decades-long tradition of holding “paid positions” to eliminate additional positions. I also want acquisitions to be more transparent, saving billions. The head of the new company will be Imre Mátrai from 1 January, who also worked at Főtáv and FKF.
The city protection package was developed by Walter Katalin, CEO of the city management holding company, who will also be assigned a new position as of January 1, he will be the new CEO of BKK.
The company has lost significant revenue in recent months due to the epidemic, not in an easy position.
As Gergely Karácsony put it in the video, he is confident that he will be able to “save” public services in Budapest under the leadership of Katalin Walter.
Fidesz responded to the mayor’s words in a statement. In a letter to the MTI, they said, “it would be time for Gergely Karácsony to stop blaming and constantly attacking the government.” They believe that the people of the capital expect the cooperation of political actors, “especially in difficult situations.”
