There are many people who prefer to put down a cigarette after another price increase, because they are reluctant to pay the price of 1700-1800 guilders. Hungary has kept the level of excise duty on cigarettes too low, in breach of its obligations under EU law.

The excise duty should have been increased by the end of 2017 according to the 2011 EU directives, i.e.

  • the total excise duty on cigarettes shall be at least 60% of the weighted average retail price of the cigarettes placed on the market,
  • or EUR 90 per 1000 cigarettes, regardless of the weighted average retail price.

The government did not comply with this until January 1, 2021, but the Hungarian excise tax rate has been in line with EU principles since then, and recently the price of cigarettes has doubled, reaching 1700-1800 florins.

In relation to this, daily.hu conducted a survey with Pulzus Kutató – a total of a thousand people were interviewed – which shows that 31 percent of the population over 18 years of age smokes, but 23 percent of smokers already have this amount too high. , so they prefer not to turn it on anymore. Some switch to other types of tobacco, possibly electric cigarettes, while 22 percent of those surveyed do not change their habits.

The price increase affects those over 60 the most, with 31 percent saying they will put down a cigarette. Based on education level, 33 percent of people with primary education would quit smoking, while municipalities said that those who lived in smaller towns and villages would mostly quit smoking.
