Athens will be the first destination for Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s newest international airline, the Wizz Air group told MTI on Wednesday.

According to the announcement, the flights will depart from the Greek capital from January 15 and the airline will also send flights from Abu Dhabi to Thessaloniki from February 4.

The route network will expand as planned destinations are added to the list of so-called epidemiologically green countries, the company said, indicating they are ready to fly. Alexandria, Kutaisi, Larnaca, Odessa and Yerevan were also part of the originally announced route network.

The announcement highlighted that with a fleet of new Airbus A321neo aircraft, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will have the smallest ecological footprint compared to its competitors in the region.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a joint venture between ADQ and Wizz Air. Wizz Air, listed on the London Stock Exchange, is the largest discount airline in Central and Eastern Europe, and currently operates a fleet of 136 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft.

Wizz Air’s sales fell 71.8 percent to 471.2 million euros in the first half of the year (in the six months before September 30). The airline’s after-tax profit after sales was € 368.8 million in the same period last year, but this year it posted an after-tax loss of € 144.9 million.
