The Green Bus demonstration pilot project continues in Székesfehérvár, as a continuation of which an electric motor Pioneer of the city of Ikarus marketed on a scheduled basis. Until now, the e-buses have been running in Debrecen, Békéscsaba and Nyíregyháza as part of the program, but they all came from abroad. However, after Germany, Poland and the Netherlands, the Hungarian bus industry can finally prove it.

Can Ikarus take flight? – Hungarian transport friends may ask the question when they hear the news, but for the moment the mood must calm down. Although the new vehicles are being built under the wing of Gábor Széles at the Székesfehérvár plant, which is the citadel of national bus production, the manufacturer is actually a joint venture between the Hungarian company Ikarus and the Chinese company CRRC Urban Traffic , Electrobus Europe. It is true that due to the increasing participation of Hungarian suppliers, the national added value is already 50.1 percent and, according to Ikarus’s intentions, this may increase even more with the start of series production.

The first 100% electric bus designed and manufactured in Hungary

was unveiled in winter 2018 after working on the prototype for a year. Since then, almost even on the salt lake in Székesfehérvár, a lot of water has flowed, but only now has City Pioneer entered the serial production phase. the the low-floor vehicle is powered by a 314 kilowatt battery, which can cover 200 to 250 kilometers, depending on traffic conditions, and fast charge in three hours can be made reusable.

According to Gábor Széles, they can produce 100-150 of them this year. However, the president of the group of companies has much bloodier hopes than this.

My secret hope is that Ikarus will return to where he was, when at least a thousand buses were manufactured in Székesfehérvár every year.

He said at the beginning of the test. Even diesel vehicles are currently being built, but they are due to be discontinued this spring and replaced by electric buses.

The Secretary of State of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, responsible for the development of the circular economy, energy and climate policy, emphasized that transport is responsible for a fifth of Hungary’s carbon dioxide emissions, and its greening is of utmost importance.

On average, electric buses traveled 165 kilometers per day and were 60 guilders cheaper to operate per kilometer. In addition, they emit almost 4,500 kilograms of CO2 less in a month, which is 50,000 kilograms per bus per year.

– Attila Steiner highlighted the experience of the pilot project so far. To make this the case, the government will provide HUF 36 billion in subsidies to local governments for the purchase of zero-emission buses for 10 years. This is preceded by a city-by-city test in which electric buses can be tested live.

András Cser-Palkovics, Mayor of Székesfehérvár, has already indicated that they are very happy with the ITM tender, because based on the feedback, they will be able to make a decision on the launch of electric buses in the future.

We are already negotiating with Volán and EON and other relevant companies to build the necessary infrastructure.

The mayor betrayed, adding that the they want to market 12 electric buses with the local airline, Volánbus.

The CEO of Electrobus Europe said they had no secret intention of bidding on this vehicle for the municipal and road acquisition supported by the Green Bus Program.

Compared to a diesel bus, the purchase price is about double, but it is much cheaper to operate, a little over ten thousand guilders a day, while a diesel bus costs many times more and the maintenance of electricity is much cheaper.

– said Tamás Fehérváry, who according to City Pioneer also stands firm in the European field in terms of equipment. The Székesfehérvár site is currently capable of producing 3-400 buses per year and employs two hundred people. If the company is really preparing for a leap of magnitude, it will need to expand its capacity in every respect.
