The Budapest Police Chief has set a tracing fee of 2 million HUF for oil contamination from the Ráckeve-Danube branch, police said. The amount can be paid to those who can provide authorities with information leading to an investigation and directly helping to identify the perpetrators. The police keep the person on the road confidential.

The most serious oil pollution in the last twenty years occurred on the Ráckeve (Soroksár) -Danube branch line, after unknown persons poured large quantities of dense used oil into a stormwater canal in Szigetszentmiklós between 10 and 12 December. The pollution, estimated at six cubic meters, flowing into the Danube branch was trapped by reeds, destroying the special protected swamp and coastal vegetation in an area of at least two thousand square meters.

The police are asking anyone with information about the perpetrator, his current whereabouts or the crime, even while maintaining anonymity, to report it to the telephone number 06-80-555-111 or the emergency number 112.
