Compliance with the law also creates a difficult situation for healthcare workers, especially if a family member says goodbye to the dying person.
István Horváth could also be convinced of this. He had not visited his 86-year-old father from March until September. The woman remembered well the words of Cecília Müller, the national chief medical officer, who often repeated:
if possible, do not visit our elderly relatives.
Ms Horváth’s father, the elderly man, has struggled with kidney problems for many months, which has led to her being hospitalized. In the summer, her condition seemed to be improving, but in early September, she had to see a doctor several times again. Meanwhile, his chokings and coughs were found during testing – they are not caused by Covid-19. The diagnosis: pneumonia. The family already knew by then that all this could be fatal for a personable and vibrant man until then. In one of the rural hospitals, the man could only be visited by a family member designated by him.
This is confirmed by dr. Kinga Németh is also a health attorney. According to the lawyer
The current ban on visits to hospitals and nursing homes makes it difficult for patients to visit, but there are exceptional cases.
Under the Sept. 8 decision, family members cannot visit inpatient facilities. However, Cecília Müller listed three exceptional cases:
• seriously ill end-stage patients
• mothers mothers
• or children can visit.
However, the situation in nursing homes is not that simple. One of the women who works in such an institution said that it is currently forbidden to visit residential social institutions, so they cannot accept relatives. The visitation ban can only be waived in one case,
if the person in the household is in the final stages.
In this case, the family member must declare their state of health and then visit the dying person with suitable protective clothing after a temperature control and hand disinfection.
They don’t always answer the phone
One of our readers indicated that for days he has not been able to communicate with his mother, who is in one of the nursing homes. And although you tried to reach them by phone and email, the phone is off, the email was not answered. Early in the afternoon on Friday, we also wanted to ask about the contact possibilities at Olive Branch Home.
However, at 1:30 pm on Friday afternoon, a machine voice responded to our request. In accordance with this, the institution can only be contacted by phone from Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Although in principle we were still within the established time, finally no one could receive a phone call. So we didn’t even know how people in a nursing home can say goodbye to their loved ones for good.
I AM NOT GOING WITHOUT HUMANITY
István Horváth was lucky. Humanity overwritten the rules so that not only could a family member designated by his father be with him in the last days, but even he could spend a few minutes with him. However, this required protective equipment and empathy on the part of the specialist. Two days after the visit, the old man fell asleep peacefully.
