The 30-year-old man and the 26-year-old woman lived on a farm in Nyírbogát, where dogs were raised in the worst sense of the word for profit. At the time, they had one hundred and eight animals, which were housed in an extremely crowded house, yard and kennel, and were not kept clean at all – the dogs were contaminated with human and animal feces.
Furthermore, the animals were not given enough to eat or drink, and most of them were essentially starving. It turned out that the chicken legs bought from the slaughterhouse were ground up and then mixed with corn grits and given to the animals. Also, the vet had never seen the dogs, so they didn’t receive the required vaccinations either. In March 2019, the police rescued most of the animals, one hundred and eight dogs, from the farm.
The couple were fined more than three million, but that did not stop them from continuing to torture animals. On another farm, breeding was resumed and even expanded, keeping cats as well as dogs in equally repulsive conditions. Nursing mothers were placed with their pups in coolers set up in the yard, the largest dogs were chained in the yard, and twenty dogs were crammed carelessly in the five-square-foot bathroom behind the dwelling house.
In June 2020, the investigating authority, together with several animal rescue organizations, rescued fifty-eight dogs, seven goats and five cats, and the party detained them. It is also clear from the statement of the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Attorney General’s Office that the woman and the man are in custody from the risk of recidivism and have filed a prison appeal against them.
