The Nagykanizsa District Court sentenced a woman with several children to one year in prison for driving a mother and her four-year-old son on a zebra in 2018, and then

left the scene unaided.

The Zalaegerszeg Court recalled in a statement sent to the MTI on Thursday that the now 50-year-old defendant was driving his car in Nagykanizsa in April 2018, at dusk, but with good visibility, with two small children in the back seat. Repeatedly, the car was not suitable for safe driving: the vehicle’s interior rear view mirror was missing, the rear tires were worn, and the rear wheels could not be braked.

The woman approached the crosswalk at Lake Balaton slightly above the speed limit of 50 kilometers per hour, and it was noticed late that a couple were crossing the zebra with their young child, striking the mother and her four-year-old son. , and then continued on without stopping.

The boy developed permanent physical disability, central nervous system dysfunction, and limb paralysis as a result of the accident, and his mother suffered multiple limb and skull fractures.

The Nagykanizsa District Court sentenced the driver to one year in prison, who was also banned from driving for three and a half years for failing to provide assistance and causing a traffic accident. It was assessed as aggravating that the woman had already been penalized for a traffic violation, but there was an extenuating reason that she was raising more children and, in the meantime, her health had deteriorated significantly.

In the explanatory memorandum, it was pointed out that the accused also endangered the two minors who were sitting inside with their car not suitable for traffic, and caused the accident by violating the TRAFFIC regulations on several occasions. According to the expert

fording would have been avoided with a car in good technical condition and at a slower speed.

The verdict was not final because both the prosecutor and the defendant and his defense attorney requested a three-day reflection period for a possible appeal.
