Austrian Minister for Family and Labor Christine Aschbacher resigned Saturday night due to a plagiarism scandal.

The head of the People’s Party (ÖVP) was accused of copying part of his doctoral thesis sent to the Technical University of Bratislava in 2020 from somewhere and not correctly naming its sources.

In his statement, the politician denied the accusations and stated that they were unfounded suspicions. She emphasized that she had written her thesis in the best possible way, with a clear conscience, and that it had been judged by renowned professors. His work is currently being judged, a procedure that everyone deserves. According to him, the accusations in the media deprived him of the possibility of this procedure and hastily condemned him.

He justified his resignation by claiming that hostility, rising political sentiment, and attacks were also inflicting unbearable force on his children, and he could not allow this to continue in the defense of his family.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said he respected him Christine Aschbacher’s decision, thanking him for his work, also signaled that his successor would be named on Monday.
