Mihály György Kátai, Munkácsy Prize-winning painter, fire enameler, sculptor, ceramist and writer, who died on Monday at the age of 85, the artist’s wife, Ingrid Kátainé Szilvay, told MTI.

György Mihály Kátai was born on October 19, 1935 in Karcag. He graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts as a student of Miklós Borsos and György Z. Gács. In 1965 he went on a study trip to Italy and then took up fire enamel. His first solo exhibition was held in 1966 in the Mednyánszky Hall. Starting in 1967, he carried out ornamental research in various European countries. He also dealt with European popular cultures, esoteric aspects of ancient Greek and Gnostic philosophy, mythologies, and Jungian psychology.

Between 1975 and 1987, György Mihály Kátai was the founding artistic director of the Kecskemét International Enamel Art Colony.

He has had several solo exhibitions throughout the country and abroad. Starting in the mid-1970s, his public works and space sculptures were particularly significant.

At the beginning of the 1980s, he had developed the so-called Kecskemét process, the beauty of which is ensured by “fire painting”, that is, multiple firing and layering in the enamel material created during this process. After 1987, he unexpectedly retired from enamel art and began painting large-scale figurative and symbolic oil paintings.

Awards: First Prize at the Salgótarján Enamel Biennial, Grand Prize at the Erfurt Quadrennial (1982), Mihály Munkácsy Prize (1984), Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kecskemét International Enamel Art Workshop (1996), Hungarian Social Career of the artists of enamel on fire (1997).

His main works: Hall of portraits of the forgotten ancestors (1969), Vecchio processio (1993), Symbols of the county of Zala, History of medicine, Guardian of life, Lawyers, Moon mirror, Délibába.
