Roy Horn, a world-famous American magician and bender who died of complications from a coronavirus infection, is a younger member of the legendary magician couple Siegfried & Roy, who works with white tigers.
A 75-year-old German-born illusionist died Friday of complications from a viral infection at a Las Vegas hospital, his spokesman said.
Roy Horn and his partner, Siegfried Fischbacher, also of German descent, had been working together for more than 35 years when Horn was bitten by a white tiger in October 2003 during a show at the Mirage Casino Hotel. The animal bit his neck and pulled him off the stage.
He managed to save Roy Horn’s life, but the star illusionist was partially paralyzed and ever since he needed regular medical treatment because he suffered permanent brain damage.
The tragic accident at the Mirage Hotel and Casino Complex ended one of the most successful shows in Las Vegas: Roy and Siegfried have given over 5,000 performances in the last 13 years of their careers.
His partner, Fischbacher, 80, said Roy was “a tough warrior all his life, even in his last days, when he heroically fought the insidious virus.” Royjal has lost one of the best magicians in the world, said Fischbacher, who said he “knew from the first moment they met that they would change the world together.”
The pair of magic and animal tricks went to the casino city of Las Vegas in 1967, where they signed a million dollar contract with the Mirage Hotel in 1988. Roy and Siegfried became world famous during their 14 years here.
The 2003 accident ended their careers, but in 2009 they returned to the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas for a ten-minute farewell presentation as part of a charity event.
Mantecore, the white tiger that attacked Horn, was considered the star of the pair. Roy was never mad at him and maintained his passion for big cats the entire time. In subsequent interviews, he said the tiger just wanted to drag him to safety when he was dizzy and fell during the 2003 show. “Mantecore instinctively felt he needed help and tried to help,” he said.
