Robert Hossein, a French actor and director who died abroad at the age of 93, is best known for his films Angélique and The Professional.
The film and theater director has starred in more than 100 films and plays, achieved his first successes as a stage director and became the leading figure in popular theater in France.
As a theater director, he performed works by Shakespeare, Lorca, Gorky and Victor Hugo, among others, and directed The Miserable in 1982 as a film musical.
As an actor, he has worked with directors such as Claude Lelouch or Roger Vadim.
International fame was brought to him by the role of Count Jeoffrey de Peyrac in the films Angélique directed by Bernard Borderie from 1964 to 1968, as a partner of Michele Mercier, the playful beauty. In the film Rififi Among Men, he co-starred with Brigitte Bardot and in The Frankish Woman with Sophia Loren.
He was then primarily cast as thugs, revolver heroes of the wild west, and haunting figures. In 1981, Georges Lautner in his action movie The Pro once again played a tough guy, Police Inspector Rosen, a ruthless opponent of Officer Josselin (Jean-Paul Belmondo).
Hossein founded her own drama and drama school in Reims, and Isabelle Adjani studied with others.
The first wife of the actor’s director was Marina Vlady of Russian descent, with whom he starred in several films.
