George Clooney, the ER star, was hospitalized the other day. This time, however, he reached the walls not as an actor shaping a doctor, but from the other side, that is, as a patient. The English newspaper Mirror reports that the 59-year-old artist was filming his new movie, Midnight Sky, in Finland around the Arctic Circle. She complained of severe, almost unbearable abdominal pain and was diagnosed with acute inflammation of the pancreas. As a result, we show the disease of pancreatitis.

The main triggers are gallstones and alcohol consumption, the former being the most common in women and the latter being the most common in men, but of course there are exceptions. There are also less common causes, such as high blood calcium levels, possibly extreme blood lipids, side effects of medications, but the frequency of these is dwarfed by the previous two.

The immediate cause is usually a party with increased consumption of alcohol or fatty foods. The main symptom, as with Clooney, is severe abdominal pain, but nausea and vomiting are also common. Diagnosis is facilitated with a blood sample, in which the digestive enzymes of the pancreas, amylase and lipase show elevated plasma levels, but imaging procedures such as abdominal ultrasound, CT and possibly MRI may also be helpful. showing swelling and inflammation of the pancreas. possibly the presence of gallstones or dilation of the common bile duct. They also help detect complications such as necrosis of certain parts of the pancreas or the formation of cysts.

The cure also depends on the cause, but it is always part of the fast, during which the body is hydrated by infusion. In case of gallstones or bile duct obstruction, surgery or endoscopic intervention may be considered. The disease can be serious or even fatal if it is not treated. Part of the cure and recovery is always a strict ban on alcohol. Failure to do so can result in recurrence or a flare-up of the disease, which can become chronic.

Chronic inflammation of the pancreas can even lead to indigestion, diabetes, and even pancreatic cancer.

Clooney isn’t the only star suffering from pancreatitis. So did Swedish DJ and songwriter Avicii, who had a brilliant career ahead of him, eventually leading to his complete decline and certainly contributing to his early death. However, he confessed that he could not stop drinking.

Contrary to popular belief, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs was not a victim of pancreatic cancer in the classical sense, that is, adenocarcinoma. He suffered from a much rarer nonalcoholic tumor, insulinoma, which originates from the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas and has nothing to do with gallstones.

What has led to acute pancreatitis in George Clooney’s case is not officially reported, but it is well known what is the most common activity in the cold winter of Finland. However, we can rule out the possibility that it was caused by excessive weight loss in your statement. As we wrote earlier, fasting is gentler on the pancreas.
