Vaccination against the new type of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in Slovenia will be free and voluntary, the government has adopted a national vaccination plan, local press said on Saturday. Everyone, regardless of whether they have health insurance, is entitled to free vaccination without exception, said Doroteja Novak Gosarič, an employee of the Ministry of Health. Nursing home residents and healthcare workers are vaccinated first.

Vaccination of the country’s residents could begin in January with a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, which is expected to be administered to 50,000 people. A separate application for registration will be created and vaccination centers will be set up in hospitals, Novak Gosarič said.

According to the decision of the Orbán government, the massive voluntary tests of the population will begin even in December. The first shipment of half a million rapid antigen tests will arrive in the country on December 11.

In Slovenia, the number of infected people rose by 1,636 to 84,769 on Friday, according to data released by the government. Another 47 patients died, bringing the death toll to 1,700. Of the diagnosed patients, 1,272 are hospitalized, 199 of whom are treated in the intensive care unit.
