The Slovak Health Minister expects a dramatic increase in the number of people infected with the coronavirus per day, with the number of daily cases expected to exceed 1,500 next week. This week, there was an average of 756 new infections per day in the country.
Currently, Slovakia is not very successful in fighting the pandemic
Marek Krajci said on Friday. The minister noted that the number of infections is increasing faster in Slovakia than in neighboring Hungary or Austria. The situation in Poland is also deteriorating, but the epidemic situation is currently the worst in the Czech Republic.
The reproduction rate of the spread of the infection has already risen to 1.43 in recent days. While the daily average number of cases was 510 last week, it has already hit 756 this week. The number of hospital admissions is also increasing, reaching 324 on Thursday. Most are in hospitals in Žilina, Trenčín and Košice counties.
The ministry head said he is concerned that the number of patients over 65, which is considered the riskiest age group, has recently increased. So far, 61 people have died in Slovakia as a result of the coronavirus epidemic.
Currently, 62 districts of Slovakia are in the highest risk red zone, 11 districts are orange and 6 districts are green, so there are no problems there.
The Minister repeatedly drew public attention to the observance of the precautionary measures. He noted that it fundamentally depends on the will of the people to succeed in reversing the current unfavorable trend.
If there is no will to do so, today’s trend will not be welcome at all.

He described holding larger family reunions, celebrations and weddings at this time as particularly risky. According to the Slovak press, there are many problems with this, especially in the Orava region, near the border with Poland, and the holding of various family celebrations has greatly aggravated the epidemic situation there.
