The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against 23 Member States and the United Kingdom, which withdrew from the European Union in January, for failing to apply the new rules for the coordination of all audiovisual media platforms, including traditional TV channels. and video sharing sites, at the EU level.

According to the European Commission on Monday, only Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden had fulfilled their obligations before the September 19 deadline for the transposition of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive. It was emphasized that the transposition of the EU Directive into national legislation was important because the new regulations would create a regulatory framework appropriate to the digital age, creating a safer, fairer and more diverse audiovisual environment. They reinforce the protection of viewers, especially with regard to the safety of the most vulnerable, such as minors.

They extend the rules on incitement to hatred to video-sharing platforms and promote the cultural diversity of audiovisual media. New independence requirements for national media regulators and protection of media pluralism will be introduced, they said.

Notably, Věra Jourová, vice president of the European Commission, called Hungary a “sick democracy” and said about Hungarian citizens of the European Union that they were not in a position to express an independent opinion.
