Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the senior pastor of the Kalisz-based diocese in western Poland, and the bishop is suspected of covering up pedophilia, the MTI said on Saturday in the wake of the Warsaw Apostolic Nunciature.

According to the announcement, the Diocese of Kalisz will now be taken over by Grzegorz Rys, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Łódź, in his capacity as the vacant (interim) seat apostolic governor.

Grzegorz Rys has replaced the Bishop of Kalisz, Edward Janiak, since June, after suspecting that he had covered up abuses against these latest children. Edward Janiak was ordered to stay out of his former diocese until abuse proceedings were completed. This provision also remains in effect.

The investigation into the omissions attributed to the county bishop was previously initiated by the Polish primate, Wojciech Polak, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Warsaw. The primate responded to a Polish documentary on alleged incidents of pedophiles in the Diocese of Kalisz, released in May. The formal procedure in this case has not yet been completed.
