Australian police arrested a man Tuesday in connection with the death of a gay American citizen who lived in Sydney 32 years ago, writes the MTI. The body of a young American man was found on December 10, 1988, at the foot of a cliff in a gay area northeast of Sydney Bay.

New South Wales police said the 49-year-old suspect was detained by investigators on Tuesday morning, not far from the old crime scene in Manly, near North Head. He was arrested on suspicion of hate murder against homosexuals, after a house search.

The victim, the mathematician Scott Johnson, was 27 years old when he died. The circumstances of his death were so mysterious that three on-site visits to the case were also made. The first inspection in 1989 found that Johnson committed suicide, the second investigation in 2012 left open the possible cause of death, and this led to the third inspection in 2017.

The latest report found that Johnson had fallen from the top of the cliff “as a result of actual threat or abuse by unknown persons” after being attacked with homophobic motives.

Australian police have commissioned a team of special experts to investigate the circumstances, and the New South Wales state government has raised the tracking fee to A $ 1 million, supplemented by an equal amount of the victim’s brother in the United States.

A 2018 police review found that in the few years since the late 1980s, 27 men have been killed in Sydney for their homosexuality.
