Hundreds of quarantined British tourists have disappeared from the Swiss ski resort of Verbier on Sunday, MTI writes following official Swiss reports.

The resort welcomed 420 British guests before Christmas, who were quarantined due to a new variant of the virus released in the UK.

Fifty of them left immediately, and fewer than a dozen of the 370 people who remained at the complex stayed there on Sunday, said a municipal spokesman for the nearby town of Bagnes.

The spokesperson added that the behavior of the tourists was understandable and strongly criticized the quarantine obligation imposed with sudden and retroactive effect. Families with young children were suddenly closed to 20 square feet. It was unbearable, he said. He also said that since then some have been shown to have turned up in France, but closed winter resorts have also been found and quarantined there.

Switzerland closed flights from the United Kingdom and the Republic of South Africa on December 20 due to a new, more contagious mutation in the coronavirus identified in those two countries.

On December 21, the Swiss authorities ordered the quarantine of the British and South Africans to remain in the Alpine country for a week for 10 days after arrival.
