The mayor of Venice called on the population to stay home and close the windows after an explosion at an onshore chemical plant in Marghera on Friday, an MTI correspondent said.

A thick cloud of black smoke rose from the chemical plant after an explosion around ten o’clock. Two workers were injured, one of whom was in serious condition. Ninety firefighters and a special chemical emergency response team are working at the site.

Venetian Mayor Luigi Brugnaro issued an order on his community interface to immediately notify the public that anyone who can do so must stay in their apartment and close the windows.

Chemical danger sirens sounded in the port of Marghera, opposite the lagoons, and in the adjacent industrial area. The chemical plant affected by the explosion covers an area of 10,000 square meters.
