On Tuesday 130 more victims of the coronavirus epidemic in Hungary were announced, on Wednesday 136, which has killed at least 15,324 people since the start of the epidemic. (The actual number may be even higher, we can see from CSO data that a significant number of people died in Hungary at the end of last year. In November-December alone, 11,517 more people died in the country than the average of 5 previous years.)

Recent data has also drawn attention to the devastation caused by the epidemic in Hungary: On Tuesday, Hungary was ahead of the United States in terms of population-related mortality data:

On the Our World in Data page, which summarizes the global coronavirus data, you can see a graph showing that Hungary is already in 10th place in terms of population mortality. Our World in Data analyzed the ratio of victims per million inhabitants, with 1,572 victims in Hungary and 1,560 in the United States.

Hungary also ranked the United States in the New York Times. There, they look at the number of victims per 100,000 inhabitants, and on March 2, the two countries had the same number of victims at 155-155. At the top of the list are Gibraltar and San Marino, followed by the Czech Republic, Belgium, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Montenegro, Italy and Portugal, followed by Hungary.

The bad news is that, according to the third wave, the Hungarian mortality data is likely to deteriorate further: Hungary has the fourth worst situation in the world in terms of mortality per hundred thousand last week, only Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Montenegro are in front of us.

And while the number of people vaccinated is constantly growing, the question is whether this alone, without further restrictions, can stop the spread of the epidemic. Wednesday’s data doesn’t promise much – not that many have died in December since December 30, as there has been a sharp increase in the number of people on the fan in the last 24 hours.
