Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday at age 60. President Fernández called the news incredibly sad and said it was the worst news an Argentine soccer fan could hear. It was also learned this Wednesday that Maradona will have a state funeral if his family agrees, and the ceremony could take place in the Presidential Palace, Casa Rosada, where seven former presidents were buried and where only five times Formula 1 athletes were athletes. They said goodbye to champion Juan Manuel Fangio in 1995.

Since the news broke, the football world has also been in mourning: Napoli spokesman Nicola Lombardo spoke about how they currently feel as if a boxer who has been knocked out is in complete shock.

Pele, the legend of the three-time Brazilian world champion, wrote in a short statement: “Of course one day we will kick the ball up there in the sky together.”

The cover image of the Twitter page of the Argentine Football Association shows a black ribbon of mourning, the publication of the organization said: “You will always be in our hearts.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese soccer star, said he was saying goodbye to a friend and a genius to the world. “He was one of the best of our time, an inimitable magician. He left too soon, but he left a limitless legacy and a space that is impossible to fill. Rest in peace, we will never forget him.”

Lionel Messi wrote that this is a sad day for his country, Argentina and soccer. “He left us, but he did not leave because Diego is eternal. I remember the wonderful moments he spent with him and I send my condolences to his family and friends.”

Gary Lineker, a former England national team fighter, said he was the best of the deceased world champion’s generation. “It was probably the best of all time. After his blessed but unkempt life, hopefully he will find peace in the hands of God.”

UEFA has announced that the legendary footballer will be commemorated with a minute of rest before the Champions League group stage match on Wednesday. (MTI, AS)
