Improving Czech data can also give us hope

Although the numbers remain high and the epidemic is slowing down, the government is already considering a reduction.

The spread of the coronavirus epidemic has further slowed in the Czech Republic. The Health Ministry recorded 7,357 new confirmed infections on Friday, 500 fewer than Thursday and 4,200 fewer than a week ago, according to the Health Ministry’s report on Saturday morning.

The number of hospital admissions, severe cases and deaths has also decreased (specific data on the latter are not worthwhile, as this number tends to increase after subsequent adjustment). 7,237 patients were treated in Czech hospitals on Friday, which is roughly 600 fewer than the day before. The number of people in serious condition is around 1,100. 5,926 people died from complications of the coronavirus according to the data known so far. At the beginning of the epidemic in March, 454 thousand people were infected in the Czech Republic, 316 thousand of whom have already recovered. Currently, the authorities register 132,000 confirmed coronavirus infections.

Ladislav Dusek, the director of the Institute for Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) announced on Friday night that the spread of the epidemic had fallen to 0.7-0.8, indicating an improvement in the situation. However, Dusek still considers it necessary to maintain precautions because he says the epidemic data is still dangerously high.

By agreement between the Ministries of Health and Education, the first and second grade students will return to their desks next Wednesday. Authorities are considering further relaxation of strict precautions and the issue is also expected to be on the agenda at Monday’s government meeting.
