“I played all the desired roles at the Szigliget Theater in Szolnok, which I was able to play. I grew up here. I became an actor, I became a husband, I became a father, I became a man. I got them from Szolnok, in a word: life, “said Botond Barabás, the new director of the Szigliget Theater in Szolnok, who replaced Péter Balázs. The Mari Jászai Award-winning actor has been working at the Szolnok Theater for 17 years. operate a colorful, exciting and valuable theater that will delight not only the people of Szolnok, but the entire country Interview with Botond Barabás.
He was the only one of the three applicants who received support from committee members in a ratio of 9: 0: 0 at the professional committee hearing. Did you expect that to be the case?
No, I didn’t expect that at all. I expected the profession to positively evaluate my application, but I did not expect such a unanimous opinion. This evaluation leads to an even deeper humility.
What are your plans as a new director? How would you change the Szigliget Theater in Szolnok and what would you keep from the work of your predecessor, Péter Balázs?
From the work of the director of Péter Balázs many important stations can be highlighted, one of the most important is that the Szigliget Theater in Szolnok registered an attendance of 110% for fourteen years. This figure is definitely an example for me.
In a previous interview, he said that “young people must be persuaded that they need a theatrical culture.” What are your plans, what new programs do you plan to reach out to young people?
Communication is first and foremost. Young people must be addressed with their own voices and in their own forums. There are many plans in the works that are specifically for youth. The online theater world of the past year has clearly shown that it works. My goal is to continue this online communication also with the younger generation, to build our common future. In addition, THE STAGE-ART-PLACE (chamber theater in front of the theater) is a perfect place to build a bridge with young people. The name Péter Balázs is also associated with the release of Adam and Eve, which has since reached national proportions and is crowned with great interest and success everywhere. Of course, we will continue to do so.
He was born in Odorheiu Secuiesc. Have you noticed your talent at home as a child?
I graduated from high school with a diploma for my success in sports, culture, and community life. I was always an interested and curious child. I wanted to be “much more” that I threw myself into something with great fervor and then concentrated on the next challenge. That changed when I was admitted to the University of Performing Arts, which was a sudden idea. When my college years began I already knew that it is more than just an outbreak, since then it has been proven that the initial triad (culture, community life, sport) has defined my life ever since.
He was first admitted to the Târgu Mureş University of Performing Arts, and already during his university years he performed in the opening performance of the newly built National Theater, The Tragedy of Man, directed by János Szikora. How do you remember the rehearsals, the performance in the new building?
I was very surprised to be admitted to college for the first time, after which I had the most wonderful years of my life. Typically for me at the time, to the admissions committee’s question about why I wanted to be an actor, I replied, “because you have to get up at 9 and rehearsal only starts at 10.” I was lucky to get the joke and get recruited. I got into a world where I just wanted to develop, study, and one of the stops on this trip was after the third year of the Zalaszentgrót camp, where I met and worked with János Szikora, who later asked me to act in the opening function of the National theater. to begin the rehearsals that the theater was still in full swing, and three months later I was able to be there alongside the most important artists in the country, in the midst of shimmering splendor. The strange grimace of fate is that now we are in Szolnok in a similar situation and facing great moments, the opening of the theater is very close.
János Szikora also invited me to Szolnok, why did you decide to accept it and sign it here?
After the Nacional, I hired Timisoara, where I worked with the director Victor Ioan Frunza, my teacher. This incredible job lasted two and a half years when my phone rang. John called his team again. I have been to Szolnok ever since.
How do you remember the first years?
The first years were very difficult. Although the company was immediately accepted, loved, which gave me tremendous strength, yet I was alone, away from my family, my friends, at a time when I still did not have a cell phone.
What did Szolnok give you?
I grew up. I became an actor. I became a husband. I became a father. Then I became a father again. I played everything I could play. I became a man. I was able to Szolnok to implement all of these. So life.
He said he played all the roles he wanted. Still: do you have any paper?
I don’t have a role dream. I want to evolve, I want to find my current acting voice, so I feel that COLOR-ART-PLACE will be the most appropriate place, which is an intimate environment. My most important role at the moment is to direct the theater well in the future. This should subordinate my acting self.
He has several awards (Mari Jászai Award, Imre Soós Award, Prima Primissima Audience Award, Bodex Ring), and this year he received the Gyula Kaposvár Award, which he could not receive in person due to the pandemic. You have received awards from the profession, from the public, how do you feel?
There is an emotional link to each award. Each one has a different story. I also received awards from the profession, the company, my hometown (Odorheiu Secuiesc), Szolnok and the public. Everything is important to everyone else, but just as important. These awards express their confidence, which gives them tremendous strength even in gray everyday life.
