Hungarian labor market may crash again: wave of epidemics is slowly reaching jobs

Employment at the pre-crisis level

There is nothing to see here, again 4 million 500 thousand work (“in Hungary”), almost as many as last year. At least we could easily think about this if we look at the most important labor statistics from the OSC, the data from the labor force survey.

It is true that public employment rebounded in August, but the figures for public workers and foreign workers are also favorable, compared to the fact that Hungarian GDP experienced an unprecedented drop in the second quarter of this year.

There is no pre-crisis level of employment.

However, according to other important employment data, administrative aggregation of employees from companies with at least 5 employees, the public sector and the non-profit sector, there were still much more than 100,000 fewer employees in Hungary in July than in the same period of the previous year. Layoffs occurred almost without exception in the corporate sector in the first wave, and the public sector kept the workforce.

What will the article be about?

  • According to the Labor Force Survey, employment is at pre-crisis levels
  • According to other data, the loss is in the hundreds of thousands.
  • What causes the contradiction?
  • How many have gotten into trouble because of the virus?
  • What to expect in the second wave of the epidemic?
