Cornstein also wrote that it was an honor and a privilege to serve the country, “which I sincerely liked, but our bilateral relations go beyond one person. I am very proud of what we have achieved with the entire team of the United States Embassy in Budapest, both Hungarians and Americans, in strengthening relations between our countries as allies. I will miss Hungary, the wonderful friends and the memories I made here, but I have always held in my heart my colleagues at the embassy, Hungary and the Hungarian people, ”said the ambassador.

In February, news broke that Cornstein was allegedly preparing to leave Hungary because, according to a Washington rumor, he wanted to help Donald Trump’s election campaign. The embassy in Budapest later refuted this, stating that the ambassador remained 100 percent committed to further strengthening bilateral relations between the United States and Hungary.

On June 25, 2018, David B. Cornstein presented his credentials to President János Áder at the Sándor Palace. The billionaire New York businessman, whose grandmother was born in Hungary, has also previously played a role in the US government and charities. He served as chairman of the New York State Olympic Committee, a member of the Battery Park City Council, and was also named Man of the Year by a foundation specializing in chemotherapy and diabetes.
