Heroic Hungarian defense, Moscow draw can be worth a lot

Marco Rossi’s team in Moscow also endured tremendous pressure from the Russian soccer team: the final result of the match played in Group B of the Nations League was 0-0. In the second half, the home team often nailed the Hungarians in their goal, which they heroically defended. This point can be very valuable in the aftermath, as in this series the Hungarians have two home games, while the Russians have two away games. In other words, the Hungarians don’t even have to give up the leadership of the group. In the other group match, Turkey-Serbia are 2-2, so the Hungarians are currently in second place in this four.

The Russian team did not cross the middle line in the first minute and a half. In the 1st minute, after starting Kalmár, Nikolics came out on the ziccer, annihilating his 12-meter turn with the feat of Anton Sunyin. But in the meantime, the edge marker sent a shot, so if the ball had reached the goal, they would not have hit. After 4 minutes, Zsolt Kalmár launched a free kick, trying to arch Endre Botka in the head, but this solution failed. At first, the Hungarian team did not play at all, we bravely faced the duel in the middle. Then, in the 10th minute, the Russians missed a great situation. Magomed Ozdojev came close to extending the visitors’ lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle, but he lifted the ball over Willi Orbán and went a little too high and hit the crossbar.

After a more vigorous play in the opening minutes, the pace slowed down a bit, but the Hungarian team did well on wet grass. In the 24th minute, Artyom Dzjuba headed towards the Hungarian goal and knocked it down from behind in the middle of Endre Botka. This was the first yellow card of the match. In the 26th minute, after a pass, the local defenders cleared briefly, the ball went ahead of Willi Orbán, who shot from 19 meters but missed the goal. In the 31st minute, Holender went to the left, collecting the ball for Gazdag, who was pushed by Magomed Ozdojev into the penalty area, but the referee threw the lame at Gazdag instead of a penalty. In response, Smolnyikov ran to the right, his ball in the middle exploded at Daler Kuzyev, but fortunately the Russian attacker had a pass too high.

Among the Hungarians, Attila Szalai clearly gave the best performance in defense. Then, when we thought that the clock was running calm, 0-0, in the first half, events in front of the Hungarian goal unexpectedly accelerated. In the 45th minute came the first beat of the Russians. Alexei Ionov received a pass, retired, but wanted to kick a goal with Artyom Juba instead of a shot, however, Dibusz read the intention and with a good shot, he put the ball in enough so that the Russian forward could not score a goal. It was a warm moment, but then the English judge spoiled the first part.

The question in the second half was whether the Hungarian team would have a situation that promises a scoring opportunity. Based on the first half, we couldn’t expect much of that. The Hungarian team achieved 45 percent possession of the ball in the first 45 minutes, which was Marco Rossi’s lowest score in recent matches. During the break, the Italian specialist changed: Holender and Gazdag left the field, they were replaced by Ádám Nagy and Attila Fiola.

It was also clear that with built actions, it is difficult for us to get to the Russian doorsteps. That is why we can rely on free kicks or corner kicks. In the 52nd minute, at the Kalmar corner, Sunyin came out at a good pace and shoved the ball into the field. Then, after a breakthrough, Sunyin came back out of his goal with force, picking up the ball, while also storing Salai.

Not long after, very warm moments developed in front of the Hungarian door. In the 54th minute, Juba took a ball fired from the right, then shot from 14 meters, the ball bouncing off Botka, but Dibusz hit it in the upper left corner with astonishing bravery. This was the biggest opportunity for the Russians so far. A minute later, Juba prepared the ball for Ozdoyev, who was able to shoot perfectly clean but kicked a ball from 11 meters. However, this was not the end of our ordeal. In the 57th minute, Zirirkov’s left pass was hit by Dibusz with an acrobatic move, but the ball landed in front of Alexei Jonov, who fired from a 15-meter shot after a trick but hit the top bar.

The match was quite one-sided at the time, the Hungarian team had to endure a lot of pressure. It was also considered that the Russian team definitely wanted to make a decision in the second half. However, it was also true that the hosts could not play against us at that rate at all times. In the 66th minute the match was a bit quieter, then at one point the Hungarian situation developed: Varga pass from Kevin Nego wanted to shoot from an acute angle towards the goal, but Zsirkov intervened in the last minute. This was the first Hungarian situation in the second half.

The pressure from the Russians seemed to have eased a bit in the quarter hour of the match, but the red jerseys who played their last home game in this series definitely wanted to keep all three points at home. A heroic defense was really needed here. If only because the Hungarian defense was getting more and more tired, a possible possibility of error was encoded. But there was always someone who could intervene as the minutes turned very slowly.

In the last minutes, the Hungarian team could barely get out of its own goal. But we were still at minute 85. Serious build-up of Hungarian attacks could really no longer be expected here. The only question was, will we endure these moments and manage to score a point against one of the quarterfinals of the last World Cup?

It worked! The away draw against the Russians is a great result, as the difference of 1 point between the two teams before the match did not increase, it did not decrease. Marco Rossi’s band in the National League will host the Serbs and Turks in Budapest in the last two rounds.
