Matteo Salvini, leader of the Italian opposition party Liga, was attacked by an immigrant at a campaign event in Tuscany on Wednesday, where regional elections will be held September 20-21. The Italian parties, without exception, condemned what happened. However, the police already apologize to the attacker.
The Directorate of Investigation Against Terrorism (Digos) has initiated an investigation to clarify what was happening in Pontassieve. According to police sources, for the moment it is ruled out that the aggressor acted intentionally.
Matteo Salvini campaigned on the streets of Pontassieve, near Florence, when a 30-year-old woman approached him and attacked him: He pulled and then ripped off the anti-immigration politician’s shirt and ripped the crosses from the collars from his neck. The woman was quickly arrested. According to Italian sources, she lives and works in Italy with a residence permit of Congolese origin – according to other reports – Ghanaian. The police excuse the attacker saying that the woman committed her “state of discomfort”.
The politician later said from the community side that he had not been hurt. I don’t have rage, I don’t want revenge, just sadness Matteo Salvini wrote.
The incident was condemned by all the major parties. Giorgia Meloni, president of the right-wing Italian Brothers Italians (FdI), referring to the ruling parties, believed that those responsible should be among those who portray their political rivals as enemies. Matteo Salvini, political leader of the ruling Five Star Movement (M5S) party, also called the events unacceptable and expressed his solidarity with Luigi Di Maio.
Elections will be held in seven Italian regions from September 20-21. In Tuscany, which has been led by the left for fifty years, the League and the Democratic Party (PD) candidate for the region’s presidency appear face to face in polls.
