A Shanghai court sentenced Chiang Chant to four years in prison for reporting on the early stages of the Wuhan outbreak earlier this year, the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
Chan Chan, 37, who previously worked as a lawyer, posted videos about overcrowded Wuhan hospitals, among others. These videos then quickly spread.
The court found the woman guilty of “stirring up disputes and causing trouble”. This broadly defined category of rape is punishable by up to five years in prison and is often used by Chinese authorities to silence critical opinions.
The young woman was arrested in mid-May in Shanghai. Chiang pleaded not guilty from the beginning and went on a hunger strike in June. His lawyer said Chiang was in a wheelchair trial in poor health. He was fed through a tube in captivity, causing serious injuries.
In addition to Chang, at least three other Chinese civilian journalists reported on the epidemic in Wuhan earlier this year, who have not been known where they have been since. (MTI, BBC)
