Presumably, no one expected Half-Life: Alyx to reform the virtual reality market, when it comes to acquisition, but thanks to Road to VR’s review, we have a good idea of the impact it has had. Although Valve doesn’t provide overly accurate data, it’s clear that since the launch of its new virtual reality game, the number of people connecting this device to Steam has increased relatively.
Almost 2% of the Steam player base was awarded in April by those who use a VR device – that’s a 950,000 increase in one month. The only problem is that we don’t know if this is really a new device, it could easily be that a previously purchased device has been plugged in or that a friend has been borrowed. Also, the Road to VR statement only tells you if a VR device has been connected, not if that device has been used before.
On the other hand, we know which models were the most popular. Oculus Quest, for example, took full advantage of the outstanding growth, and while it’s a standalone device, it can also connect to Steam. All in all, Oculus updates account for 44 percent of used headsets, HTC devices for 30 percent, and Steam accessories account for 12 percent of the pie.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that virtual reality is not yet a common option: it needs an expensive and powerful machine, so its widespread use is not yet in sight, Alyx here or there.
