“There were no changes in the consolidated list of deceased, the Hungarian mortality data is still significantly better than the European Union average”– Minister Gergely Gulyás said on the day that the daily death toll from the epidemic in Hungary was set at 182 deaths. He continued: “Of course, this also means that, as in Hungary, the number of deaths continues to rise in countless member states of the European Union. Therefore, as sad record values are being set in Hungary day by day, this is still a better figure than the European Union average. “

Gulyás said that there are 526 deaths per million people in Hungary, compared to the EU average of 613. This can only be true if we look at the aggregate statistics valid since spring. If we also take into account the March-April period, when the epidemic was very mild in Hungary, we get a much more favorable outlook, which does not reveal much about the current situation.

The government has been diluting the statistics using this method for months. When it was still possible to ask live about government information, we repeatedly posed the question why this was problematic, but Gulyás simply said not to look at the numbers and that we should not have an unworthy debate about the death toll.

Compared to Europe, mortality trends in Hungary remain tragic. In the last two weeks, 182 coronavirus infections per million people have died in Hungary. It is the fourth highest in all of Europe, only ahead of Croatia (186), Bulgaria (261) and Slovenia (302). Plus, he doesn’t even have a Thursday morning record.

In the last week, the data has deteriorated by 40 percent compared to the previous week. If we look at the table, this number is also higher in only a few countries, including those like, for example, Estonia, where mortality is very low, so relatively few new victims can show a big jump.

Mortality is also increasing to a lesser extent in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Croatia. In Poland, the numbers improved by 9 percent.

Hungarian deaths in the second wave (this already includes Thursday’s data):

When the country expects anti-epidemic measures, the government prioritizes realizing its own power. Legalizing the theft of billions of billions of public property, the ideological war against sexual minorities, many changes to the electoral law to avoid the cooperation of the opposition … and there will be more ideas here.
