Hungary and Poland should stop vetoing the key adoption of the seven-year EU budget and the corona virus recovery fund package of around 1.8 billion euros. Michael roth, Germany’s Minister of State for EU Affairs, holding the rotating presidency of the European Union, on Tuesday.

Speaking ahead of a scheduled videoconference meeting of the Council of Ministers for EU Affairs in Berlin, Roth said it was no longer a time for vetoes, but to act in a spirit of speed and solidarity.

Citizens of all member states expect support. There is no excuse for any further delays, so I ask everyone in the European Union to live up to their responsibilities.

Roth said in an MTI report.

Heiko maas In a statement issued on Tuesday, the German chancellor expressed confidence that a solution could be found to the Hungarian and Polish veto. He announced that in the coming hours and days, Germany will hold talks with all interested parties to find a solution.

We not only need a solution, but a quick fix. I’m sure it will work

He said. Maas added that “it would not be wise of him” to say what he really thinks of the veto.

Karoline Edtstadler The Austrian Chancellor of the European Union and Constitutional Affairs said in a statement before the meeting in Vienna that he could not understand the veto that the two member states had exercised in the vote on the financial package and the EU budget. He stressed that this is not the time to express “national sensitivity.”

In his opinion, the two countries will not be able to maintain their position for long at a time of intensification of the epidemic and emergency measures affecting the economy. However, since unanimity is required for adoption, there is increased pressure on member states, Edtstadler added.
