From pole position, World Cup leader Lewis Hamilton could have cut it the eighth race of the season after running the highest average speed lap in Formula One history in Saturday’s time trial. Next to him were his partner Valtteri Bottas, behind them, and in the second row, Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez lined up.
Max Verstappen could only wait for the red lights to go out in fifth place until the Ferraris reached the top 10 on the stopwatch – this has been unprecedented since 1984 in the history of the Italian Grand Prix.
A RAJT
Hamilton got off to a good start, kept the lead, his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, meanwhile, didn’t get off to a good start: the Finn lost his position in the first corner against Carlos Sainz, and shortly after Lando Norris, Sergio Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo were able to overtake him.
Verstappen also fell back at the start, slipping into eighth place and then improving one position on lap 3 by overtaking Lance Stroll. The Ferraris did not improve any position at the start.
At the beginning of the sixth round Vettel had braking problems with his car, so the German soon abandoned Ferrari’s first national race.
By lap 15, Hamilton’s lead was already 9 seconds ahead and Sainz also took a comfortable lead over teammate Lando Norris. Bottas, on the other hand, couldn’t keep up from sixth place, in fact: Max Verstappen followed closely behind.
HAMILTON MUST DRIVE IN BOXING WITH A SIGNAL
The safety car will be sent to the track due to Kevin Magnussen’s race car stopping on lap 20. Hamilton comes to boxing right away, but it turns out the pit lane was closedbecause the referees were working in the entrance. Antonio Giovinazzi did the same. Both riders received a 10-second penalty for the foul.
A few laps later the other drivers could now legally drive for a wheel change, and the safety car left the track at the end of lap 23: Hamilton was in the lead ahead of Stroll, Gasly, Giovianzzi, Räikkönen and Leclerc! !
LECLERC A GUMIFALBAN!
Leclerc crashed into the rubber wall on lap 24 of the Parabolica: a Ferrari slid under his Monaco and tried to counter-turn, but could not avoid the accident. Due to a collision with Leclerc, the safety car was sent back to the track, but shortly after the race was interrupted with a red flag.
During a race interruption, race cars are free to change wheels, giving those who have not yet been in boxing a strategic advantage. And the race continued in neutral thanks to a rule made a few years ago!
Hamilton made the new start well and Gasly took second place ahead of Kimi Räikkönen. At the end of round 28, Hamilton immediately entered the area to regain his 10-second penalty, the defending champion came back in 17th, last place! So Gasly took the lead.
At the end of lap 30, Giovinazzi also came into the area from 3rd place: he too was given a 10-second penalty for entering an irregular pit lane. In the same lap, Verstappen also entered the box, however, he also dropped out of the race, presumably due to a technical error.
On lap 34, Sainz went on the attack and at the first corner he circled Räikkönen in a beautiful maneuver, coming up second and chasing Gasly. Soon, arriving behind Stroll and Räikkönen, he left the outside in a corner combination called Variante della Roggia alongside the former world champion.
On lap 36, Norris also caught up with Räikkönen, and he too was able to overtake the Finn, who could have been attacked by Bottas moments later, and also succeeded against the Alfa Romeo driver.
Ten laps before the countdown, Gasly’s lead was 2.6 seconds over Sainz, who was chasing him. third, Lance Stroll was driving 2.3 seconds behind. Hamilton then drove in 12th place after being able to pass in front of Albon, Russell and Grosjean.
On lap 46, Hamilton overtook Räikkönen and moved up to 10th with 1 point. The World Championship leader also led Sergio Pérez behind him on lap 49, already in ninth place and ahead of Daniil Kvyat in a couple of days.
Although Sainz came behind Gasly in the closing laps and attacked the French hard, the young driver stayed in the mud and ultimately won a victory in the parade in Italy.
Besides the AlphaTauri rider, Sainz and Stroll could also get on the podium, with the other scorers being Norris, Bottas, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Ocon, Kvyat and Perez.
The Formula One World Championship will continue next week in Mugello, Italy, with the Grand Prix of Tuscany.
