Gábor Török: something can happen that we never even thought about before

According to political scientist Gábor Török, the change in the government’s popularity depends on how the economic crisis unfolds after the coronavirus epidemic. Unprecedented developments can now occur in the development of the country’s international relations.

Fidesz’s goal is very simple: to retain power also in the upcoming elections, political scientist Gábor Török told Western interview. However, from this point of view, the luckiest thing for them now would be for the country to forget about the epidemic as soon as possible and for the smallest possible economic and social crisis to follow.

According to the Turks, the government has now learned to participate in crisis communication. However, the problem should not be here either: the effectiveness of communication is less important in situations where people feel that their situation worsens in everyday life. The main question is how deep the economic and social crisis will be in the wake of the epidemic, how the government can ease the difficulties, and how many people will blame the government for making their fate worse.

The political scientist does not believe that there was a single minute of crisis when Viktor Orbán, the prime minister of Hungary, would have given up his international goals. The situation is not new in this respect, but due to the radically changing international and national environment. It is not foreseeable how relations between the European Union and Hungary will develop in the future. Perhaps only one thing is certain: if at any time there is any chance of unforeseen events, it is now.
