Epic released Unreal Engine 5

Stylistically, it was demonstrated on a PlayStation 5, probably not just by the number.

Epic Games unexpectedly uploaded two videos to YouTube that essentially revealed Unreal Engine 5. The demo ran on the Sony PlayStation 5 console and was graphically visible as it generated virtually micropoligon-level quality, while the textures also had resolution. 8192×8192 pixels, made possible by the virtual texture, also known as megate textures.

Physical simulation is provided by the self-developed Chaos module, while particle simulation is provided by internal Niagara. In addition, the system responsible for calculating sounds has been renewed, probably to accommodate the capabilities of the new consoles.

An essential element of the demonstration is a fully dynamic and real-time global lighting module called Lumen, which contributes greatly to the developed graphic quality.

Unreal Engine 5 will launch in 2021, but Epic’s top partners are likely to have access sooner as a new generation of games can already be created for incoming consoles.
