The Slovenian prime minister came out in favor of accepting the Hungarian position in a letter received by all the leaders of the member states. Otherwise, Janez Jansa said that the EU risks leaving the next state to join the union.

Janez Jansa wrote a long letter to the Slovenian Prime Minister, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. In the letter, Jansa compared the European Union to a convoy of ships, where the ships represent each member state. He writes that the convoy was created for “safe navigation in the direction of peace, freedom and development” and several joined it later. Its aim is to ensure that the tragedies and shipwrecks of the European continent in the 20th century are not repeated. The author of the letter believes that the convoy has been sailing in a very stormy sea for some time. Recalling the challenges posed by terrorist attacks, Brexit and migration, he asserts that while rather than repairing the ship’s cracks caused by Brexit, we debated whether to pick up intruders on board in an emergency. Finally, one of the larger ships left the convoy, referring to the departure from Great Britain.

Janez Jansa believes the convoy is currently heading towards an iceberg and details how the debate on the rule of law will disrupt the unity of the EU. He puts it this way: “Any discretionary mechanism that is not based on an independent judiciary, but on politically motivated criteria, cannot be called the rule of law.”

He also criticizes the compromise reached with the European Parliament. Janez Jansa puts it this way: “We need EU institutions that are not involved in internal political conflicts in the Member States. We need action guided by the wisdom of the founding fathers of the EU. We have to realize that the EU base is not about money, it is about values. “In several places governments that did not have to go through repressive dictatorships are stabbed. For example, when he says:” This is probably difficult to understand for someone who was born in prosperity, but it does not relieve him of the responsibility of working to improve the future of the EU. “

The Slovenian Prime Minister also writes that challenges can only be overcome if everyone adheres to the founding treaties, otherwise we can expect that “the next ship will also leave the convoy”.

Continuing with the metaphors, Jansa says that in the face of a multitude of problems, ignoring the historic agreement reached by the European Heads of State and Government in July is “like discussing the menu of a ship heading for an iceberg.”

The dilemma before us is very simple. Respecting the July agreement is a responsible approach to a better future for the EU. Disrespect is the opposite. “

To make conclusions. Finally, it expresses the hope that, in the spirit of the above, a solution will be found that suits everyone. The letter was also sent by Janez Jansa to all the Heads of State and Government and to the President of the European Council.
