Major drug seizures this year indicate that the coronavirus epidemic has not curbed drug trafficking, particularly cocaine, the European Union Drug Agency (EMCDDA) said in a report released Tuesday.

In the case of cocaine, there are many indications that the high availability of the drug has been maintained in the European market and is even spreading more rapidly in countries where it was not before.

– found in the evaluation of the Lisbon-based organization.

According to the observatory, drug traffickers quickly adapted to the restrictions and changes introduced by the epidemic in terms of smuggling routes and methods to maintain the level of their sales. These innovations, as well as the negative effects of the epidemic crisis, pose new challenges for prevention.

It is of great concern that the economic consequences of the crisis make some European societies even more vulnerable to drug problems.

Said Alexis Goosdeel, director of the agency.

And the transport of large quantities of cocaine, cannabis and heroin by sea raises concerns that organized crime is infiltrating legal supply chains, shipping lanes and large ports. While street trading has been restricted by measures introduced due to the epidemic, consumers and merchants have turned to online darknet marketplaces, social media, and home delivery.

The experts also wrote that cocaine had gotten cleaner in the past two years, with a record 181 tonnes of the drug seized by EU authorities in 2018. Furthermore, the amount of heroin seized almost doubled between 2017 and 2018. The agency also draws attention to the proliferation of new synthetic opium derivatives and synthetic tablets containing high levels of MDMA on the European market since last year.
