Proceedings have been started, no suspects in the case yet.

Ágnes Vadai, representative of the Democratic Coalition, addressed the issue of the purchase of real estate by Lárinc Mészáros in Tihany to Chief Prosecutor Péter Polt.

Vadai asked based on the fact that Mészáros and his wife bought a property in Balaton Uplands National Park for more than 500 million florins, which is registered as an orchard. Here, according to nature conservation regulations, a residential building cannot be built. The drone recordings, however, show that the “farm building” is actually a large vacation home, the “reservoir” is a swimming pool, and the “orchard” is 6 to 8 trees, which is a fruit tree. or not.

Vadai wondered if it was a crime to damage nature in violation of building regulations; if an investigation was initiated into the damage to nature caused by the violation of Tihany’s construction regulations (Vadai pointed out that it was not only in the case of the aforementioned, that is, the Mészáros orchard) and if, according to the prosecution, the obligation to protect nature applies to all or they are more equal.

Péter Polt answered yes. He writes that damage to nature can be committed by violating building regulations and assures Vadait that the prosecution will always take action “regardless of the identity of the perpetrator.”

He gave a more explicit answer to the second question: the criminal process began on June 22, 2020 and is still ongoing, although the suspect has not yet been questioned. However, he did not reveal who he was against. (In the previous version of our article, we linked the investigation to the Mészáros case, as Vadai wrote about it throughout his MP question, although at the end he asked a general question.) Polt adds that due to a 2017 amendment to the law, the investigation is divided into two parts, recognition and investigation. However, during the reconnaissance phase, the prosecutor’s office only has the right to supervise until the suspect is questioned, so it cannot provide information on this.

The former editorial office of index.hu has essentially ceased to exist, the country has lost its most read online interface. This is one of the most serious blows to the independent Hungarian press and freedom of information to date. The number of independent editorial boards from power is steadily declining, and those that still exist are trying to stay afloat in a growing headwind. At HVG, we persevere, not giving in to pressure to bring in national and international news every day.
