The German press is slowly receiving an interview every day, in which Viktor Orbán is a little (or very) planned. A week ago, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas spoke at Spiegel, followed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission in Bild, and now Donald Tusk, President of the European People’s Party, again at Spiegel. Tusk explained to the newspaper that Orbán bases his power on fear of people, be it migration or a coronavirus, exploits situations to strengthen his power, and these maneuvers are incompatible with the spirit of democracy.
Tusk said “Carl Schmitt would be very proud of Viktor Orbán”, which sounds particularly harsh in Germany, since Schmitt is an ultra-conservative jurist, a member of the Nazi party since 1934, one of the legal founders of Hitler’s dictatorship and a fervent defender. The Polish party leader also explained that he would like to try to exclude Fidesz from the Popular Party again this year, as there is a global fight for democracy and this requires vigilance from opponents of autocratic regimes.
