According to current guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans with a positive coronavirus test can return to work or school as soon as 10 days after symptoms appear, as long as your illness does not require hospitalization. However, new research shows that symptoms are far from disappearing.
According to a study published in the British Medical Journal on Tuesday, patients have to wait more than a month to get tested and prove they have survived the infection. The study also notes that one in five tests with a negative result is false, suggesting that many people unknowingly spread the virus even though their test came back negative.
Even some people with a negative test report coronavirus symptoms such as loss of smell and taste, impaired brain function, malaise, and these symptoms can last for months.
According to the doctor, who told CNN, the results suggest that the coronavirus leaves a damaging mark on the bloodstream, so symptoms do not go away even when the virus itself is no longer present in the body. For these infected people, it is not yet clear whether their lives will return to where they were before.
The coronavirus has so far had 185,000 deaths in the US, according to Johns Hopkins University.
