The UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs has removed cannabis from the list of the most dangerous drugs and, therefore, the most persecuted. With this, marijuana has been reclassified from IV, the harshest grade, to the mildest grade, recognizing that it can only be mildly addictive and can even be useful in the treatment of certain diseases. The reclassification was initiated by WHO, the United Nations Health Organization.
Reclassification does not bind member states, but it can be an important reference for decriminalization or legalization in political debates.
The vote was very close: 27 of the 57 Member States of the Commission voted in favor of the reduction and 25 against.
Supporters of mitigation included the US, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and all EU countries with one exception.
The only exception to the EU was Hungary, which voted against the decision.
China, Russia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Cuba, among others, shared a position with Hungary. Here you can see which country voted. (CNN)
