Several opposition and women’s rights organizations have called for the resignation of Danish Social Democratic Chancellor Jeppe Kofod, because after an Easter conference he invited a 15-year-old girl to his hotel room and then slept with her. The incident had happened before and was already known: Kofod was just a foreign affairs spokesman at the time and had to resign. However, last year he was appointed foreign minister, which opponents say is unacceptable. The politician claims he was “drunk and stupid” and defends himself by apologizing, writes the international news agency V4NA.

Danish Social Democratic Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod has apologized for sleeping with a 15-year-old member of the party’s youth organization (DSU) during an Easter course in 2008.

“I was drunk and stupid. I realize it’s not enough to apologize. I wish I could change that. I can only apologize,” the politician told Danish TV2, adding that it was the biggest mistake of his life.

According to the television channel, Kofod claimed that he did not know that the girl was a minor, although he could hardly deny that he knew that she was a member of the youth organization, when he called her into her room. The politician was 34 at the time.

Kofod’s words are contradictory because although he himself assures that it is not enough to apologize, however he was appointed chancellor last year and he accepted it;. However, in 2008 he had to resign as spokesman for Social Democratic foreign policy. It turned out that this was not punished, but promoted: in 2014, she was already the party’s number one candidate in the 2014 European elections, and in 2019, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen appointed her foreign minister.

Samira Nawa, a politician from the opposition Danish Social Liberal Party, said the apology was worthless, that the minister should draw conclusions. The prime minister, on the other hand, refuses to replace her, citing an apology. She maintains that Kofod was elected by the electorate, but not as foreign minister, there she was appointed by the prime minister.

The scandal is particularly embarrassing for the Danish government because just a week ago Kofod announced its foreign policy program, which was rather loosely called the Kofod doctrine. and that Danish foreign policy must be based on social democratic values such as the fight against climate change, human rights and democracy. Analysts say that having sex with a minor casts doubt on the minister’s credibility, making the doctrine, and therefore the Danish government, ridiculous.

In Denmark, the age of consent is 15, so only a few weeks later Kofod did not commit any crime.
